Mahoney Baloney

In a question as to whether anyone from Generation X wouldn't know what the Blue Oyster is, the concept of Mahoney, Steve Guttenberg, and baloney being rather similiar came up.

Before you scoff, let's analyze:

Guttenberg is from Brooklyn and was surrounded by Italians growing up. Baloney (actually spelled bologna) is Italian, coming from the town of Bologna, Italy in the north.

Guttenberg became a very popular actor in the 80s after movies like Cocoon, the Police Academy movies, and Short Circut were all released. Bologna was hugely popular in the 80s as well after Oscar Mayer began offering the cold cut on a massive scale.

It's kind of hard not to have a soft spot for Guttenberg as the lovable Mahoney character that got all the hot babes after doing what was right. And it's hard not to smile when you think of bologna, because it reminds you of a time when you were innocent and young.

But for as much as Guttenberg was a hero in the 80s, you don't really want him starring in any major motion pictures today, just like you wouldn't really want your main meal today to consist of anything to do with bologna.

So as you can see, the two are actually pretty similar after all.
